On the 14th May 1948 the state of Israel was proclaimed independent. The
immediate results were an outbreak of killings and the creation of huge
numbers of Israeli and Palestinian refugees. Palestinians refer to it as
the naqba (catastrophe). Luke Wilson explains how Israel has become a
bulwark of imperialism, what it has meant for the politics of the Middle
East, for Israeli Jews and Palestinians, and how the creation of Israel
has perpetuated anti-semitism elsewhere.

Over the weekend of May 2-4 a conference was held in Berlin on the theme of "1968 - We shall win the
last battle", organised by the youth and students of the German Left Party
(Die Linke). There were 1600 people taking part in the conference and the
Marxists of Der Funke intervened in the debates, organised a stall with
literature, provided international speakers from Spain and Pakistan and one of
the Der Funke supporters, and member of the national council of the youth wing
of the party, made one of the concluding speeches.

In August 1968 Ted Grant drew a balance sheet
of the revolutionary crisis ignited in France with the May events. In this
important article he carefully analysed the main problems facing the
revolution, exposing the treacherous policies of the Stalinist CP leaders, who
gave De Gaulle the possibility to recover from his earlier paralysis, and the
sectarian mistakes of the leaders of the "revolutionary left".

The greatly acclaimed
democratic coalition government of Pakistan has fallen, just a mere 41
days since it came into office. Sharif has pulled out his ministers officially
over the question of the judiciary. The real reason lies deep in the bowels of
society, where millions of Pakistani workers and peasants are facing
intolerable conditions.

Although still in its early stages,
there is clearly a reawakening of the Russian working class taking place with a
growing number of strikes taking place. Once this picks up steam at some later
stage it will cut across all the confusion and demoralisation that have been
dominant features in the past.

An example of a very militant strike in Severouralsk, one of a series in the
recent period. The miners were determined but the bosses were ruthless. This
experience is another indication of growing working class militancy in Russia.

The dramatic events that have unfolded in the recent period
in Lebanon
have hidden a very important development. As Hezbollah moved into West Beirut they successfully cut across a general strike
over wages that was planned for the same day. As the workers were coming
together to fight for their common interests, Hezbollah pushed its own agenda,
thereby heightening ethnic tension.

Hezbollah went into Beirut
and came out again once the government had backed off on its plans to dismantle
its communications network. Although powerful, the Hezbollah leaders are only
interested in maintaining their share of power. They are not interested, and
are incapable of, solving the real problems facing the masses.

Up till recently, Britain’s main high street banks had
not seemed to have suffered much – they were all announcing big profits and
there was little talk of large ‘writedowns’ of worthless assets. But now the
Royal Bank of Scotland has announced that it lost £4bn in the last three months
as a result of the world’s great credit crunch and it must write off £5bn in
loans and debt securities that it had on its books as worthless. The credit
crunch is going to hit Britain in a big way.
